Steven A. Beebe, Ph.D.
Dr. Beebe is Professor and Chair of the Department of Communication Studies at Southwest Texas State University. He is also Associate Dean of the College of Fine Arts and Communication. His undergraduate degree and Master¿s degrees are from Central Missouri State University; his doctorate from the University of Missouri-Columbia.
He is the author and co-author of nine books that have been used at hundreds universities worldwide. He is also the author of over one hundred articles, book chapters, and professional papers. Dr. Beebe has twice been a visiting scholar at Oxford University and has also been a visiting scholar at Cambridge University.
For over 25 years he has been an active communication consultant, trainer, and conference speaker listing such clients as IBM, 3M, Motorola, American Express, the U.S. Air Force, the U. S. Department of Education, and the U.S. Department of Defense.
Dr. Timothy P. Mottet
Dr. Mottet is an associate professor in the Department of Communication Studies at Southwest Texas State University. He teaches graduate seminars in training and development, instructional communication, and communication assessment in addition to directing and teaching the fundamentals of human communication basic course.
Dr. Mottet¿s research appears in Communication Education, Communication Quarterly, Communication Research Reports, Journal of Psychology, and Psychological Reports.
Before entering graduate school, Dr. Mottet worked in management for Northwest Airlines where one of his responsibilities was customer service training for flight attendants, ticket/gate agents, and front-line managers. His training experience is in the areas of customer service recovery skills, manager coaching skills and flight attendant certification. As a customer service manager, Dr. Mottet assisted with the merger of Northwest Airlines and Republic Airlines as well as the international alliance with KLM Royal Dutch Airlines.
Dr. K. David Roach
Dr. Roach is Professor and Chair of the Department of Communication Studies at Texas Tech University, in Lubbock, Texas. He teaches courses in business and professional communication, communication in instruction and training, public speaking, nonverbal communication, persuasion, and quantitative research methods.
His area of research is in instructional communication and his research has been published in journals such as Communication Education, Communication Quarterly, Journal of Applied Communication, Communication Research Reports, World Communication Journal, and Southern Communication Journal.
Dr. Roach has conducted training and has given invited presentations on training topics for Texas Instruments, Covenant Hospital, District IV New Mexico Health Care Professionals Organization, West Texas Chapter of the American Society of Training and Development, Texas Tech University Physical Plant Supervisors, Texas Tech University Library, and the Lubbock Independent School District.

Outstanding Training Book

I bought "Training and Development" because it was one of the 20 top training books written, and I'm very happy I bought it. The book was extremely well written and had in it many helpful do's and don'ts, outlines of how to present programs and very interesting material. I read it like a novel and know I shall refer to it many times in the coming months and years.

Comprehensive, Clear, and Effective

This book is an excellent resource for the instructional design process. It provides clear, concise explanations of the theory and practices needed to develop, deliver, and evaluate solid, effective training programs. While the book's focus is on communication an leadership skills, the practices are equally applicable to "hard skills" or technical training. Beebe, Mottet, and Roach explain the material in a manner that is easy to read and understand, so this book works as well for people who have no experience with training as it does for seasoned professionals. I have managed corporate learning and development for a number of years, and this is the central reference I use with my development teams.
Be warned, that the authors come from an instructional communication background and, therefore, do not appear to be slaves to the ADDIE framework like other authors. Everything you find in ADDIE is there, and more, but if you're looking for another book to rehash and regurgitate that stuff, this is not it. While it's not as catchy as ADDIE, their process is much clearer.
If you're teaching or learning to do training, this is an excellent text.
If you're a trainer, instructional designer, learning manager, organizational development or human resources manager, this book belongs on your shelf.

Used this book for a college class. I really enjoyed reading this book because it doesn't read like a typical textbook. I found the information in this book to be practical and easily implemented.
