About the Author
Donaldson Chair in Operations Management at the Curtis L. Carlson School of Management, University of Minnesota. He is also the Co-Director of the Juran Center for Leadership in Quality and has earned an appointment as a Distinguished Teaching Professor. He received the B.S. degree in Industrial Engineering with high distinction from the University of Minnesota, MSIE University of Minnesota and Ph.D. from Northwestern University. Prior to joining the University of Minnesota, he taught at the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California, and was an analyst for the office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense. Professor Schroeder has received research grants from the Ford Foundation, American Production and Inventory Control Society, Exxon Education Foundation and the National Science Foundation. He is a recipient of the Morse Award for outstanding teaching at the University of Minnesota.

A great book for OM

I am OM professor for MBA and business undergraduate students. I have employed Schroeder text (different editions along time) several times. It is very clear and friendly for students. The last edition shows new structure and includes topics as Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, Supply Chain Management, Theory of Constraints, among others. Each chapter has exercises and questions to solve. As previous editions, there is a OM business cases section, with new ones. The cases show a good complexity level, and let the teacher to choose the aproppiate level for the students group. Also, there is a text-web page, where one can find other resources. However, the text doesn't develop plant layout, plant localization, balancing assembly line, times study.

college textbook: operations management

This book was required for one of my core business requirements. The fact that it is paperback makes it much easier to carry compared to hardback books. I purchased it online with Amazon. It was delivered promptly right to my door, packaged properly and the book enclosed was in shrinkwrap, so it was delivered in excellent shape. Although there is a lot of terminology, it is easy to read as the words are not too crowded or too small on each page. The diagrams are a good visual to enforce understanding of concepts and "handshake" icons besides paragraphs to remind us of the importance of people skills. In addition, there's a recommended site on the inside of the back cover for practice quizes which I highly recommend before taking an exam!

I used this book for my MBA Operations Management class, and it explains everything nicely and the text is easy to understand. In addition, the book is soft cover like another reviewer said. The paper quality is good and it's easy to carry in a backpack. Strongly recommended as a textbook!

There's a Zen story about a teacher who holds up his finger, then reminds his student to look beyond the finger itself, to what the finger is pointing at-the moon. That's what this book does: it transcends itself-and with outrageous style. Warner, an early-'80s hardcore punk musician, discovered Zen in college, moved to Japan to make B-grade monster movies, and eventually became a bona fide Zen master by formally receiving "dharma transmission." Yet true to his punk spirit, he relentlessly demands that all teaching, all beliefs, all authority-including his own-must be questioned. ("Why should you listen to me? Who the hell am I?... No one. No one at all.") By turns wickedly funny, profane, challenging and iconoclastic-but always with genuine kindness-Warner devotes chapters to some common Zen notions such as the oneness of reality ("Why Gene Simmons Is Not a Zen Master"), reincarnation ("In My Next Life I Want to Come Back as a Pair of Lucy Liu's Panties") and the vital importance of the present moment ("Eating a Tangerine is Real Enlightenment"). Yet this is no litany of Zen orthodoxy designed for study. By liberally sharing anecdotes from his own life as a down-and-out punk rocker and maker of monster movies, Warner constantly focuses on the importance of a direct experience of reality in all its rawness over adherence to any set of beliefs-even Zen ones. Adult/High School--Warner has appropriated the phrase "Question authority," a longtime battle cry for the punk-rock aesthetic, for use as a Buddhist mantra. Much of his book is laid out like a memoir. Readers follow the author from high school and his interest in '70s rock music and philosophical thought through his musical career under names like Zero Defex and Dimentia 13 and finally to his dream job with the Japanese television studio that produces the popular live-action children's show, Ultra Man. The common threads throughout are a rabid interest in transcendental meditation and enlightenment. A conversational tone and endless streams of pop references to everything from Minor Threat to TheMatrix movies make this a readable and even fun book. Warner stresses that enlightenment and meditation do not come easy, which separates his writing dramatically from many other Western books on Buddhism. It's nice to see someone with strong ties to rock coming down so hard on people like Terence McKenna or even the Beatles, who promoted drug use as a way toward higher thought. Although some of Warner's connections between Buddhism and the various pieces of pop culture are simplified, his idea of questioning is particularly striking. Not just questioning authority, but friends, oneself, and, yes, him. The last thing Buddha reportedly told his followers was to question authority, which is something Warner, as bass player in an Ohio hardcore band and later a toiler on Japanese B-movies, could relate to. Oh, he studied with a Zen master in Japan, too, but pretty obviously, he isn't your typical Buddhist priest, and Hardcore Zen isn't your typical Buddhist book. Warner brings the same tough, skeptical attitude to Zen that he brought to punk rock. He asserts that nothing is sacred, and doubt in everything is essential. He believes, though, that everything is sacred, even while maintaining that everything is profane. He admits his attitudes can all get rather confusing. Certain things, however, are clear: Buddhism stresses the here and now, and the paradise you seek all your life is right in front of you. Profane and sometimes irrelevant; capable of devastating, corrosive humor; offering nothing gentle or conventionally reassuring, Warner pulls no punches. His book is an honest account of his search for truth. June Sawyers

Zazen

I read Brad Warner's second book Sit Down and Shut up and enjoyed it so much that I had to get his first book, this book, and read it. I will say that I liked Sit Down and Shut Up more than this book but it is still a very good read. Good enough that after this one I had to keep going, and in the last 6 weeks, I have read all five of his Zen books. They are very motivating. They make it clear that the practice of Zazen is the most important thing. I have been practicing for years, and I have just now begun practicing regularly. So, thank you Brad for that! Also, what I like about his books is that he is very human. He doesn't try to sound like anything other than he is. He may be a "Zen Master" but he talks like a "Zen Practicer". I don't agree with everything he says and a-lot of the time I would really like to have a good argument with him. This is good. It means his writing style is engaging; engaging enough to be enraging sometimes. The downfall to his books is that there are MANY typographical errors. Which, I know we all do. I probably have some in this review. But, this is not a published book. Typographical errors interrupt the flow and "cheapen" the experience because they make it seem like it wasn't worth the effort to do it right. This is especially true for his newest book, Hardcore Zen Strikes Back.

It's about time!

I see there are some folks that really disapprove of Brad Warner's way of presenting Buddhism. Well all I can say to that is that not all us have that same background, and can appreciate the same ways of communication on any subject. That goes especially for spirituality. Even the Dalai Lama said in The Art of Happiness that "there are over 7 billion people in this world, maybe there should be 7 billion religions."

I believe that a demeanor like Warner's for the face of Buddhism is one that is long overdue in our society. His attitude towards the subject is one that resonates with the many people of today that tend to be turned off by most religious and spiritual practices. Most people I know that ask me about Buddhism get the impression a bunch of flower loving hippies doing yoga. There are many different flavors of Buddhism, but a lot of the cultural fluff that surrounds it covers up its very simple message. This book reveals that message from the perspective of a man that was once very pessimistic towards the idea of most spiritual practices and their dogmas. The first chapter describes exactly how I felt about many subjects including Buddhism. This passage from the book could sum it all up:

"It's a damned shame that so much so-called Buddhist writing seems intended to function like spiritual elevator music. Mix up some lullaby-style writing and a few well-worn Buddhist clichés--or quotes from Yoda ("Let the Force flow through you!") and David Carradine's character in Kung Fu ("Patience, Grasshopper!"), if you don't know any real Buddhist soundbites--wrap it all up in a serene cover with a ripply-water picture and--Hey! Yer makin' Buddhism!"

This was a very funny and entertaining read! If you do read this book, and like its angle, I also recommend Buddhism Plain and Simple by Steve Hagan.

I highly recommend this book!

I first heard of Brad Warner in 2004 or 2005, when my roommate bought "Hardcore Zen" and was telling me how great it was. Because at the time I knew nothing of Zen, I figured I would not like the book because I wouldn't understand it. Then I read a nasty, negative review on Amazon and realized I needed to read this book. I find that there's always something pretty awesome in a book that gets a nasty review--I assume that the author hit a nerve. So I read it. I am slow reader and at that point in my life I was going through some major anxiety. I savored the book. It was what I needed at the point in my life. I became a fan of Brad's blog. I have read another book of his I really like "Sex, Sin and Zen." I need to read the others. I plan on readng "Zen Dipped in Chocolate Wrapped Karma" next. I find him to be both a gifted writer and an insightful man. Anyhow, I realize that I probably would get more out of reading "Hardcore Zen" now. So I bought the Kindle edition. I actually like it even better now--maybe the additional life experience I have had over the past six years makes it even more relevant to my current life experience. Although I have never been able to figure out exactly why someone left a nasty review, it prompted me to read it so, angry, negative reviewer (whoever you really are), I thank you. And Brad Warner--Thank you for your wonderful writing.

More than just pictures!

I picked up this book, expecting to find essentially a picture book. However, this book is so much more...and it is lovely.
The book begins with an introduction by Leonard Marcus, the children's book reviewer for Parenting Magazine and a well-known book critic and historian.
Following this is an autobiography with many personal photos. I found the story of Carle's early years interesting: how he was born in the United States but then his parents returned to Germany when he was six. His father was drafted into the German army during World War II and Carle never saw him again for 8 years, when he emerged from a Russian POW camp weighing 80 pounds. Carle was a lackluster student, mainly because his creativity was stifled, but he did have some empathetic art teachers in Germany. In his early 20s he returned to the U.S. where he was promptly drafted into the army!
The next section of this book was by Ann Beneduce, the first editor to publish Carle's work. She first commissioned him to illustrate a cookbook. After that, she decided to publish his first book "1,2,3 to the Zoo" but could find no one in the United States who could satisfactorily produce it, so she had it done in Japan.
Next, Viktor Christen, a German editor, wrote about Carle's vision and what it means to children.
Takeshi Matsumoto, the director of an art museum for picture books in Japan, wrote an essay about Carle's use of color.
The text of a speech, entitled "Where Do Ideas Come From?", given by Carle at the Library of Congress was the next section of this book. He gave this speech to librarians and educators in 1990 at the International Children's Book Day Celebration.
Next was a photo essay on his technique of paper coloring and collaging, which also explained why he colors white tissue paper rather than buying pre-colored papers (they fade with age).
Lastly was a section of illustrations from his books, in chronological order. I found it interesting to see how his art had changed and become much more detailed in 30 years.

The Time is Now

With the unsettling stories in the Middle East continually in the forefront of the news cycle, it seems that many of the events prophesied in the Bible are in the process of being fulfilled right before our eyes. Over the years, I’ve compared the many different interpretations of these prophecies with the Biblical record and frankly I’ve not been totally satisfied with the results.

Into this mix Bill Salus offers a new book entitled The Now Prophecies. This book looks at some of the more important prophecies related to the destruction of Damascus, the final Israeli-Arab war, current events in Iran, and the decline of America. In this book Mr. Salus takes, what is to my knowledge, a unique approach to organizing these prophecies into a congruent interpretive framework. Mr. Salus’ framework is as follows:

1. The NOW Prophecies
2. The NEXT Prophecies
3. The LAST Prophecies

According to Mr. Salus the NOW prophecies “spans the period of time existing between the establishment of the Jewish state of Israel, which happened in 1948, and the fulfillment of the Ezekiel 38 and 39 prophecies…” which Mr. Salus explains are the NEXT prophecies.

I must admit to feeling a little bit lost while reading this book. The NOW Prophecies is the first book I’ve read by Mr. Salus and it became apparent to me that I missed much of the necessary background information explained in his other books, Psalm 83, The Missing Prophecy Revealed and Israelstine: The Ancient Blueprints of the Future Middle East. So if this is your first book by Mr. Salus I’d definitely recommend you first read his other books before you dig into this one.

Admittedly, I have not reached an understanding of the subject with which I am completely comfortable. This is the 2nd book I’ve read recently discussing the Gog-Magog prophecies of Ezekiel 38-39 occurring before the final tribulation (Douglas Woodward’s: The Next Great War in the Middle East being the other book) and I can’t shake the thought that many of interpretational challenges that both authors raise might better be solve by seeing the events of Gog-Magog as occurring after the millennial reign of Yeshua. To be sure this is a minority opinion but this approach would allow us to take the burying of the wooden weapons of war at face value as well as the statement of Israel living in un-walled villages. Also it might explain why Gog-Magog comes to take spoil, after all Jerusalem will be receiving tribute from all the nations of the world during the Millennium.

In any case, even though I am not totally convinced by Mr. Salus’ arguments presented in this book and I do have other disagreements I enjoyed reading it and seeing the subject through his eyes. To be fair to Mr. Salus I came into this discussion not totally understanding the complete context of his arguments for Psalm 83 and Ezekiel 38 & 39 so this deficit on my part I’ll have to remedy by reading his other books before I am willing to make a more definitive conclusion regarding his interpretations.

In closing I will say that the final two chapters of this book are critically important for every Christian to read regardless of how you believe events in the Middle East will shake out in the coming days and years. The time is NOW for Christian's to prepare to meet the coming Messiah.

I have read many books on the last of the last days and this book nails it.
We are definitley living in perilous times. Even this past week here in Michigan we had a shooter with no background of violence go on a rampage. zreminds of the twelve year old boy in one of the chapters of this book states that the reason him and his dad sits in the back row of a movie theater is so they will not be the first ones shot. I have been making many of the preparations that Brother Salus has suggested so that me and my family will be prepared fpr what is coming upon us in the days and years to follow. If we do not heed Gods Holy Word it will be our own fault. Grea Book.... Thanks Bill for the inight that God gave you and for takig the time to put it in print.

Great book

This is a very very good book. Its so currently updated and explains verses so well that all who read will hopefully pass it on. This should help many readers understand prophecy to the extent that salvation will be received quickly. Again very good book!!!

Save $500 on Chi Kung tapes and books

It's all in here. This book was written in 78', I guess they didn't create product lines like some people I won't mention (Mantak). All the techniques I use daily, minimal theory all application, that's what we want, isn't it?
The book was like $1. That's insane compared to the amount of stupid DVDs being sold as "super chi kung" and all that other stuff, which are useless.
I would buy 100 of these books if I could, and give them to people who are serious about their daily 20 minute routine. It works.

Still using this at 100 yrs old

We recently visited one of my wifes aunts and saw this book on her coffee table. She said that she has been doing the exercises as described inside the book for many years and still does everyday.We couldn't believe that she was 100 years old.She gets around with the help of a walker and she is very upbeat and has many great stories that she shares of her life experiences. My wife and I ordered the book from Amazon.com as soon as we got home and we are now performing the exercises daily.What greater recommendation is there?

Amazing Stuff

All the years of study into Universal Principles, religions, health and diet, energy meridians, the elements affect on our health, etc. If I had know this book existed it would have short-cut my education...but then I would never have had all the fabulous experiences.

I have now bought all the other books on Taoism by Dr. Stephen Chang and in hard copy so they will be a permanent part of my library.

I highly recommend it to anyone ready to take responsibility for their healing and destiny.
