Reading this book is like attending your very own carnival and magic show, minus the crowd and dirty fairgrounds. Prepare to be completely swept away by the rich colors and enchanting illustrations.

Leon and his siblings have conflicting opinions about the magic show they are about to see. Tom and Pete are quick to announce that it will only be tricks not real magic, and Little Jo looks disappointed that her brothers might be speaking the truth. Leon shushes them, knowing there will be magic - you just have to believe.

The curtains slowly part and the show begins. After a group of wild jugglers and a swirl of mechanical toys, it is finally time for the main act. With a puff of purple smoke, Abdul Kazam takes center stage and Leon can practically smell the magic rolling off the magician in waves. When Abdul asks for a volunteer, Leon immediately knows it must be him. Without hesitation, he climbs straight into the magic box and falls deep into another world. Leon has discovered the Place Between.

The Place Between is where magic sends you. Everything that disappears by magic appears here, waiting to be called back. Leon watches as magicians' assistants appear and disappear, as well as scarves, coins and rings. Doves and cards flutter about and gold stars swirl everywhere. This is an amazing world, alive with magic. Just as he is settling in, Leon hears his name - he is being called back by the magician!

The illustrations, the colors and the fonts all lend themselves to a most magical experience for the reader. Pages practically glow in tones of deep plum and rich gold, with gleaming strains of stars swirling in the margins. The text is printed in a different sizes and fonts - they replicate a poster board or program. You could read this half a dozen times and never come close to seeing all the tiny background details that make this book so special. It is an amazing work of art and goes to show if you believe in magic, it does exist.

An absolutely magical experience

Well, I have a new favorite picture book. You need to read this book, you need to get others to read it...I promise, you won't regret it.

The first "thing" that really drew me into this book was the amazing and incredibly unique illustrations, which start with the cover design. The talent level of Baker-Smith it just huge and the mixed media take on illustrating this magical story, was really a magic-based experience for me as a reader.

The story is a sweet and comforting ride to the place between...the place where magic sends you. Leon and his friends go to a magic show, where Leon definitely expects to see some real magic and the others aren't quite sure they believe in anything magical. When the magician takes the stage and chooses Leon to be his assistant, the trio know they will be finding out what's real and what's not.

Leon experiences this place between here and there and shows that believing in something others think is silly, really does pay off in the end. His magical journey is real and wonderful, allowing him to fully understand just what magic means to us all, while helping to convince his friends that it's ok to believe in something others may not. Leon is a wonderful character, so believable, and I just felt an instant connection with him (which is hard to do in these short picture books).

The text is even presented in a unique way, allowing for great visual imagery and making this book a fabulous choice for a read aloud. The story is compelling enough, but the page spreads are just magnificent.

I cannot rave about this book enough. Go get one, buy one, get it from the library, buy it as a gift. It's a fabulous story to share with your family and it's now one of my new favorites.

The best book on body symbolism ever written

A "fierce" book in about the best way you can imagine a healing book can be.

Messages from the Body: Their Psychological Meaning (The Body's Desk Reference) Revised 2006 edition (694 pages Spiral-bound)

Michael Lincoln, Ph.D., Director of a drug and recovery counseling clinic in Oregon, gives the reader a rare glimpse into the workings of the subconscious. His book aspires to be nothing less than a "translation" of individual physical pains, anywhere in the body, into their psychological meanings. Awareness of the causative mental-emotional forces behind physical imbalances, is the purpose of this book.

The book is not meant to be read thru start to end; it is strictly a reference book. This is not a summer beach towel read; it's strictly for practitioners and serious self-healers--ideally those able to test their way thru suggested mental-emotional causes of pains and diseases to learn which patterns articulated "hit the nail on the head" for you or your client. Persons able to self-test with any kind of kinesiology method will enjoy being able to easily narrow down the multiple "translations" of most symptoms and apply them to specific individuals. Although expensive and not widely distributed, holistic practitioners will find it invaluable for assisting clients to examine the underlying causes of their physical challenges.

After introductory material on the meaning of body types; and so on, to assist the reader in getting the most from this text; and, details about the author's life experience enabling him to write as he has, the book launches into an alphabetical listing of symptoms from "abdominal cramps" to "yellow fever." Each symptom has one or more accompanying mental-emotional habit pattern connected with the physical symptom, suggesting how it may have come into manifestation. But wait--there's more! Lincoln doggedly expands his "translations" into the area of family systems and/or developmental stage thinking. This is virtually unheard of even in books in the field of healing cum psychotherapy. His accuracy is mostly startlingly accurate here as well.

This is a "fierce" book in about the best way you can imagine a healing book can be. Broad in scope, deep in intent. For readers wishing an easier self-help book shelf read, with paragraphs you can email to sick relatives, I suggest Your Body Speaks Your Mind, 2nd ed, by Deb Shapiro. Lincoln's directness and precision when describing the underlying causes of symptoms is unmatched in other books of this type. He is NOT looking for a kinder, gentler way of looking at the hurts in one's past; rather, his pointed observations require openness, self-honesty and courage to read. It will be up to practitioners to lead their clients to see the ideas here as worthwhile challenges to face and address.

Lincoln's book has a well-deserved blue language caution. He does not mince words and frequently uses street talk and some swear words to make his point as directly as possible. Despite his impolite language neither I nor other reviewers have found fault in his accuracy, even if his language induces cringes from time to time and is often inappropriate in polite conversation with clients.

The new, 2011, books on this topic in Theta Healing have not been seen by this reviewer but are likely to be towards Lincoln's book here; that is, reference books for working practitioners.

Indexing remains a problem in the 2006 edition. A second index is needed for this 700 page reference. The alphabetical one is present; now we need a homeopathic index, the head down, by body parts. I'd be happy to assist with this task, if invited.

My clients think I'm amazing.

Dr. Lincoln's book gets right to the emotional/belief root of physical issues. My clients can't believe how "right on" the information is. It saves much time and allows targeted healing where it will really do some good. My application is The Healing Codes which targets only the spiritual (belief) roots of life issues.

whenever I have a pain now, I refer to this book and many times it is so spot on with the emotions that are attached to the pain. That always amazes me. My 4/5 stars is for the binding. After much page turning, I worry that the pages will eventually wear through the plastic bracket. I suppose I should go find out what "worrying about that" means!

Very good general driving text, no info on Police driving however

This book functions as what most Americans would consider a Drivers Ed. text book. It is a very good one, but it is specific to the UK (which side of the road is driven on, signs, etc). It goes into much greater detail on the physics of a vehicle in motion then most texts of the sort would do, and does a good job of explaining this material. The book does not have any information relating to high speed or pursuit driving, and states that these are subjects best learned with an instructor. As a general text about driving it's a 5 star book, those looking for information about police driving (as I was) look else where such as Bob Bondurant on Police and Pursuit Driving.

About the Author
Mike Palmquist is an Associate Provost at Colorado State University, where he leads university-wide efforts to enhance learning and teaching in face-to-face, blended, and distance courses. A professor of English and University Distinguished Teaching Scholar, he is recognized nationally for his work in computer-supported writing instruction and, in particular, in designing Web-based instructional materials to support writing. His most recent Web-based projects are Writing@CSU (http://writing.colostate.edu), an open-access, educational Web site for writers and writing instructors, and the WAC Clearinghouse (http://wac.colostate.edu), the leading site for communication across the curriculum. He is the author of numerous articles and essays on writing and teaching with technology and writing across the curriculum. In 2004, he received the Charles Moran Award for Distinguished Contributions to the Field, which recognizes "exemplary scholarship and professional service to the field of computers and writing." In 2006, the CCCC Committee on Computers in Composition and Composition named him Outstanding Technology Innovator. From 2009 to 2011, he served on the Executive Committee of the National Council of Teachers of English and as chair of the NCTE’s College Section. He is the author of Joining the Conversation: Writing in College and Beyond (Bedford/St. Martin’s, 2010); The Bedford Researcher, Third Edition (Bedford/St. Martin’s, 2009); and Designing Writing: A Practical Guide (Bedford/St. Martin’s, 2005).

If this is not your writing style, stay away

Even though I hate English, I had to take it for my degree. This book was just ok. There were a lot of concepts that just did not match my writing style. I ended up only using it for the mandatory assignments that we had to use the book with. Other than that, I stayed away. I did like how cheap it was.

Illusion and Reality

In Fool for Love , Sam Shepard analyzes the complicated relationship between May and Eddie who are involved in a love-hate, fascination-repulsion 15-year-long relation which is once more in the `on again' phase.
Set in a low-budget motel room on the edge of the Mojave Desert, May and Eddie play out an unpredictable encounter. Traveling close to 2,500 miles to come back into her life, Eddie attempts to once again declare his faithfulness and commitment to the unconvinced May, who tells him: "You gotta give this up. You've been jerking me off like this for fifteen years. Fifteen years, I've been a yo-yo for you". May screams for Eddie to leave yet pleads for him to stay upon his repeated exits. Through their arguing, the chemistry and history the two have shared becomes apparent and it is obvious that the characters are deeply in love. "We've got a pact...we've made a pact", Eddie said to May. "You know we're connected, May. We will always be connected...that was decided a long time ago", he added.
A bottle of tequila blends the couple's arguing into the narration of a story that deepens on May and Eddie's past revealing how the two were already completely in love when the truth was learned about their true relationship. At this point of the play, Shepard had gotten illusion and reality finely combined that it takes a while to understand that the Old Man observing, and occasionally interacting with the characters, is just their distant father's ghost.
Shepard has done an amazing job in this play managing illusory conversations naturally flow within the real ones. May and Eddie seem to have both independent and joined conversations with the Old Man.
A fourth character, Martin comes into the story, as the shy, naive date of May to reminds us that the conversation between the protagonists is "real". As Eddie, now drunk, continues his story of how he came to know May, the old man yells for him to stop the story, but ends up discovering facts of his own past as well -- which confused me since his presence is not real but illusory only.
The fact that at the end of the play, the motel gets burned down by Eddie's mistress, -- as May refers to her -- May is forced to move away again, suggesting us that the vicious cycle in which the characters live, will be repeated once again following what Eddie once told May: "You'll never get rid of me. I'll track you down no matter where you go".

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting to get different results. We learn of Eddie, Mae, their father, and a "Man" (Martin) coming for a date blind to the status of the relationship of his date and her brother and their father. I am a Senior at Lindenwood University in St. Charles Missouri, double majoring in Theatre and Mass Communications. This April, I will be directing "Fool For Love" as my senior project. This play, as analyzed in a previous modern drama class and in my current working analysis, is highly identifiable with anyone who has ever been involved in a severely dysfunctional relationship that won't go away. Mr. Shepard creates four intricate and powerful characters sharing both realistic and ethereal existances.

An Intense Journey With A Climactic Ending

Sonny McGuiness, an old prospector for years, converses with a Hopi Indian named Dennis about the "silver springs", a legendary location for untold riches. Dennis give Sonny directions but warns him that the Wah Wah Mountains in Utah are cursed. When Sonny finds the claim, he feels something strange around him and wonders how much of Dennis's tale was true. But creepy feelings aren't enough to stop Sonny, especially when he discovers that the "silver" is really an unusually pure mass of platinum.

The claim is purchased by Earthcore, a company led by a cutthroat named Connell Kirkland. Connell has lost all emotion after the death of his wife, making him an icy, deadly adversary in the corporate world of mining. He'll let nothing and no one stand in his way, even going so far as to hire ex-NSA "interrogator" Kayla Meyers to seek out the truth of the Wah Wah claim. Kayla is beautiful and deadly, and has a true passion for her work.

Connell assembles a team of the best-of-the-best in their fields for the initial exploration of Earthcore's new find, using utmost secrecy to avoid the competition getting wind of the vast platinum mine. He hires Dr. Angus Kool, a genius with three PhD's, a scientist who's sociopathic behavior goes far beyond his arrogance. Joining Angus is his assistant, Dr. Randy White, also rated in the genius range. Mack Hendricks, an Australian Engineer, is pulled off a current dig to join Connell's crew. Running security for Earthcore is Patrick O'Doyle, an ex-assassin from the military, a hard, scarred man who takes his job more seriously than his own life. Assisting O'Doyle is Bertha Lybrand, a heavily muscled warrior and exceptional soldier. Crashing the party, to protect un-explored cave systems, are archeologist Dr. Veronica Reeves and her mentor/father figure Sanji Haak, who've been written up in Nation Geographic for their similar dig in the mountains of Argentina. Last is Cho Takachi, the security guard assigned to watch and monitor Sonny's movements.

With a surprisingly sophisticated base camp established outside the vast cave and tunnel systems that lead toward the dense mass of platinum, the exploration begins. Sonny, on-site as part of his monetary agreement with Connell, suddenly wishes he'd stayed away. The longer he stays near the Wah Wah's (which he'd christened Funeral Mountain) the more uneasy and fearful he's become. Sonny and Cho have dug up the past of Funeral Mountain, and found nothing but failure and death. Nevertheless, he's unable to stop Connell and his Earthcore party from entering the mountain. All are in danger, and not all will make it out alive. There's something alive down there, and it doesn't like visitors.

Sigler has written a fantastic sci-fi thriller. Starting as a podcast, Earthcore was later published as a book. Contrary to what other reviewers have said, the characters are not weak but fully fleshed individuals, each with their own virtues and flaws. The environment is painted so real that I could feel the heat, feel the claustrophobia of the tunnels. The book is very fast-paced, the ending so exciting you won't be able to put it down once you've reached the last 100 pages. I was deeply fascinated by the race discovered below, and mesmerized by their evolution. The intense race to return to the surface left me breathless, biting my nails as I read on. Sigler is a remarkable new author, definitely one to watch out for. Pick up a copy of Earthcore for the ride of your life. I highly recommend this book. Enjoy!

Must read for anyone into Sc-Fi, Monsters and adventure!

WOW!! My first impression 50 pages into this book was "WOW" and that did not change one iota after finishing it. After reading Contagion and it's predecessor by Scott Sigler, I could not wait to get my hands on anything else written by him. Earthcore is incredibly hard to find a copy of - especially if you want it both in English and at an affordable price, but it is absolutely worth the effort and the inflated used book price. (This is coming from someone who tries to never pay more than $10 for ANY book) I blew through this book in a day and half - I could not put it down and found myself walking down the hall reading with one eye and walking with the other eye. The action is insistent and anxiety driven with tiny little breathers spaced far and between - much like those the characters received. The characters that you assume will lead you through the adventure twist and change and by the final chapter you really haven't a clue who will be left standing and who will be taken - violently, screaming all the way. While a few other reviewers have described this book as scary or horrific, I would hesitate to use those words.... Earthcore is more along the lines of constant anxiety and a nagging feeling of something stalking you just beyond the edge of your vision.

This book reminded me of "Descent" (by Jeff Long I think) from some years back. It has a similar theme, but Earthcore is no knock off of "Descent" and stands on it's own fair and square. Earthcore was still rattling around in my head hours after finishing it and I sorely wished I had a sequel to follow up with. Totally a must read!!

Demonic Depths

This fast-paced horror-science fiction romp is an exciting and non-stop action story. I enjoy such things, trying to create something of the same mood in Season of the Plant, although I come nowhere near the skill of this author. I have a background in geology, have gone into unexplored caves, and can relate to the excitement and mystery which surround plumbing the depths of our planet. What these explorers discover, however, is a wonderfully amazing and horrifying one. Well described, action to the last page, with primary characters unfortunately flawed (especially the protagonists) which make the book really worthwhile in the long run.
As in Ancestor, which I read prior to this work, the author creates a villain who epitomizes all the qualities which create endless concern for others to the very end.
