Historical, Easy and Fun to Read

I bought this book for my grandson who loves to read, but sometimes gets discouraged by the length of "chapter books." Most shorter books at this reading level are fanciful fiction. This book is not too long, and it's informational as well. He loved reading about a "real man" who invented a "machine" we use daily.

I have read and re-read this story with my son who loves trying to figure out how things work. It is a good way to take an understanding of how tin cans transmit sound and apply it to how telephones first began.

Bowden, an award-winning reporter for the Philadelphia Inquirer, where chapters of the book were first published as a newspaper series, tells the story through the eyes of the soldiers, capturing their ways and language. Unfortunately, Noguera Mendia's translation fails to portray their military jargon and social background. Expressions like "humvee" or "Hoo-ah" are left in their original form, devoid of meaning for Spanish readers. Moreover, mistranslations like "los intelectuales podian teorizar y escribir hasta quedarse sin pulgares" ("Intellectuals could theorize and write until losing their thumbs") for the original "Intellectuals could theorize until they sucked their thumbs right off their hands" are also common, showing Noguera Mendia's ignorance of American idioms. Finally, some sentences are inexplicably long and formal, slowing down the plot. Despite the occasional vale for "ok" and tio (literally "uncle") for "pal," Noguera Mendia avoids Castilian regionalisms. Notwithstanding the deficient translation, Noguera Mendia's research regarding military organizations is accurate, and this book promises to be a popular item in public libraries and bookstores.

Update - Diet and exercise recommendations outdated, technical explanations easy to understand

The technical explanations of heart disease were good and easy to understand. However, the specific diet and exercise recommendations were outdated. Such as eating margarine instead of butter, poopooing coconut oil, little or no red meat or eggs, eating nuts sparingly and eating whole grains. Grass fed, grass finished beef is high in Omega 3s and eggs eaten raw or where the yolks are runny provide a lot of nutrition.
I based my opinion on the findings of 2 doctors ... Dr. Mercola and Dr. Al Sears. The diet recommended by Dr. Mercola is closest to the Paleo diet and as follows:
* A large-scale, 30-year long study found that people who regularly ate one ounce of nuts at least seven times per week were 20 percent less likely to die for any reason, compared to those who avoided nuts in their diet
* Eating nuts at least five times a week corresponded to a 29 percent reduction in mortality risk due to heart disease; a 24 percent reduction for respiratory disease; and an 11 percent reduction for cancer
* In order for your body to adapt to burning fat instead of sugar, replace non-vegetable carbohydrates in your diet with high-quality healthful fats. Raw nuts are one source of such fats

Dr. Mercola recommends focusing on eating whole, unprocessed foods while avoiding grains and sugars which are precursors to disease. Consume a diet primarily high in healthy fats like coconuts, avocados, olive oil, butter and raw nuts like almonds(ideally between 50-75 percent in your diet) and raw, organic vegetables. Next, consume good protein, such as grass-fed, organic meats and organic pasteurized eggs. His current recommendation is one gram of protein for every kilogram of lean body mass, increasing it by 25% if you are pregnant or training for athletic events. This translates to about 49-70 grams of protein a day for most people. Eat Fruits moderately because they contain fructose, which should be kept below 25 grams a day, including 15 grams from whole fruit. Reduce or eliminate grains from your diet to help lower your insulin and for you to achieve optimal health and well-being.

To each his own .... and yes Dr. Mercola and Dr. Sears have products to sell .... just as this cardiologist is selling a book .... Both Mercola and Sears offer free "researched" and "well supported "articles on health topics. I prefer not to be sucked into the big pharma drug scene .... so my preference is Mercola and Sears. Dr. Sears has a new book that I just purchased The Ageless Heart Manual: Advanced Strategies to Reverse Heart Disease and Restore Your Heart's Pumping Power"

The title could be "Everything Your Cardiologist Didn't Explain & Advise", I read it, I did it and I'm winning.

Even if discovering Dr. Crandall's book at just the right moment hadn't rescued me from the depression and bewilderment of my stent event and given me a shining hope and promising path forward, I'd still say read his book! But it did, so I can endorse the advice given wholeheartedly. I'm living his advice right now 9 months after finding myself in the emergency room; 40 lbs lighter, healthier and happier than I've been or felt in way over a decade. His plan is simple and straightforward, lifestyle choices affect our life and he explains how. This particularly helped me, understanding how it all works for and against us, then in unvarnished terms he explains what to do about it. And if you do it and I did you're on your way all the way back from heart attack, heart disease and it's been wonderful. Living Dr. Crandall's advice and seeing the results has been such an uplifting experience it inspired my better half to create a blog about our journey called "Fix It Plan" (found via google by adding dot com). For me this was not only a life saver but I've got to say again ... a life improver, I'm back and better.

I found this book to provide the most relevant information in a way that is easy for anyone to understand. This is a good book for anyone to read whether or not you currently have any heart or cholesteral health issues ----- especially since many people do not even realize that they are developing problems until a serious event happens. Glad I purchased ---- plan to purchase additional copies for my brother and a friend who can benefit from this information.

Always Use Caution

As the author implies, "Always Use Caution" AND always check with your doctor if you have any health concerns.

This book is written in a layout of historical background and folklore. There are many uses for hydrogen peroxide shared here and most are recommended with low grade level H2O2 (hydrogen peroxide). The many uses (not all included in this book) depend on the strength and what you mix it with (i.e. dye in glow sticks, to make peroxide blonde hair, grout cleaner, AND yes as a tooth cleaning agent, etc.) but caution is advised!

That being said, my take is if it can be used as a main ingredient in explosive devices (higher strength), I'm not sure I want it (even lower strength) IN my body, but perhaps as a cleaning agent in the house.

Note, 35% hydrogen peroxide is used to prevent infection transmission in hospital environment, and hydrogen peroxide vapor is registered with the US EPA as a sporicidal sterilant.

Quick research indicates the following grades apply (not necessarily recommended by author Thacker, just FYI):

Grades of Hydrogen Peroxide
3% Hydrogen Peroxide (Drug Store / Grocery Store Variety)
Made from Diluted 50% Super D Peroxide.
Contains stabilizers: phenol, acetanilide, sodium stanate, tetrasodium phosphate, etc.

6% Hydrogen Peroxide (Used by Beauticians in Hair Coloring)
Comes in strengths labeled 10, 20 and 40 volume. Activator added to use as a bleach. Unknown Stabilizers.

30% Re-Agent Hydrogen Peroxide
Used in medical research. Contains stabilizers.

30-32% Electronic Grade Hydrogen Peroxide
Used for washing transistors and integrated chip parts before assembly. Unknown Stabilizers.

35% (also 10%) Technical Grade Hydrogen Peroxide
Contains a small amount of phosphorus to neutralize any chlorine in the water it is combined with.

35% Food Grade Hydrogen Peroxide / 50% Food Grade Hydrogen Peroxide
Used in food products like cheese, eggs, whey products.
Also used to spray inside of foil lined containers for food storage (antiseptic packaging system).

You can find food grade hydrogen peroxide in 3%, 6%, 7%, 12%, 17%, 35%, 40% or 50% solutions.

Consumption of any concentration of hydrogen peroxide above 10% can cause neurological damage.

Was Disappointed!

I was very disappointed with this book. It tells you a few household uses for peroxide that can be purchased by everyone, but the health benefits that is raved about in the advertisement is only for prescription peroxide and of course that means visits to physicians and costly testing. Wished I had saved my money--do yourself a favor and save YOURS!

Damaging Misinformation!

Warning to anyone who might follow instructions to use hydrogen peroxide orally. Oral use, even in a diluted strength, can cause mucosal membrane abnormalities in the lining of the mouth. My father had been encouraged by a dentist to rinse with hydrogen peroxide which he did for many years. Unfortunately because of that he had to live out his last days in absolute misery, unable to eat or even drink water. The entire mucus lining of his mouth had been destroyed by this practice, making it painful even to swallow. Don't take my word for this; research it on the internet before taking this irresponsible advice.

Not a Buddhist, but enjoyed it

I'm not a Buddhist, but a Christian. I started reading, just to see what it was about and read the whole thing. The beginning is a very relaxing read and had some highlightable/clipable quotes. I do have different religious beliefs, this book offered some areas for further prayer and contemplation but I did not find these areas offensive so much as a beneficial exposure to a different perspective. Overall, I'm glad that I had a chance to read this book and learn a little about who OSHA is. Thanks to Amazon.com for having this book in Kindle format so I could start reading it in 60 seconds.

Great thoughts, weird at the end

This collection of Osho's wisdom, recorded from extemporaneous speeches rather than written all at once, offered many insights into the nature of negative and positive emotions. I definitely highlighted quite a few pearls like:
"Many people think that sentimentality is spirituality. But emotions are as mental as thoughts, and what you call your heart is as much in your head as your head. You can become emotional very easily. You can cry and weep with tears falling down, big pearl-like tears - but it is nothing spiritual."
"Sadness is passive anger and anger is active sadness."
"When you see anger in others, go and dig within yourself and you will find it there; when you see too much ego in others, just go inside and you will find ego sitting there. The inside functions like a projector; others become screens and you start seeing films on others which are really your own tapes."
"There is one and only one way to understand that to be angry is to be stupid: watch anger in all its phases, be alert to it so it does not catch you unawares; remain watchful, seeing every step of the anger. And you will be surprised: that as awareness about the ways of anger grows, the anger starts evaporating. And when the anger disappears, then there is a peace. Peace is not a positive achievement. When the hatred disappears, there is love. Love is not a positive achievement. When jealousy disappears, there is a deep friendliness towards all."

For me, the only thing that keeps this from being a five star book is the section at the end with "practical" suggestions on exercises for meditation, which are often pseudoscientific and almost all...well, weird.

The format wasn't perfect on the Kindle but the content was great.

Learn how to let go

This book is excellent. You are not simply TOLD what to do about dealing with negative emotions, you are shown HOW and WHY! This is NOT just another self help book. This is a book I wish I had read ages ago. We are indeed all taught to suppress rather than channel our negative emotions. This book will show you how to get RID of them by acknowledging them and working through positive solutions.. rather than say grab a drug and addict yourself to trying to escape them (and you never will this way)..

Saeid Mokhatab is a member of the International Advisory Board for EMERTEC Research and Development Ltd, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, as well as an advisor of natural gas engineering research projects in the Chemical and Petroleum Engineering Department of the University of Wyoming, USA. His expertise lies in the area of the hydraulic design and engineering of multiphase flow transmission pipelines and natural gas processing plants. Previously, he worked as a researcher in Cranfield University at England, working on TMF3 Consortium Sub-Project VII: Flexible Risers. He has participated as a flow assurance consultant and the engineering manager in various domestic and international gas-engineering projects, and has published more than 50 academic and industrial oriented papers, reports, and books. He is also a coauthor of forthcoming Elsevier's handbook of Flow Assurance in Oil and Gas Production. Mokhatab is a member of the editorial advisory board for Elsevier Book Publishing Company in North America and serves as a member of the editorial boards for ASME-PSD Monograph Series, Journal of Petroleum Science and Technology, Journal of Petroleum Technology, PetroMin magazine; a contributing editor for World Oil magazine, an associate editor for the International Journal of Modeling and Simulation, a technical editor for SPE Projects, Facilities and Construction Journal as well as a referee in several scientific journals and international pipeline conferences. He has also served as a guest editor of the Journal of Energy Resources Technology-Transactions of the ASME for the period of August 2003 to March 2006. William A. Poe is a Business Consultant for Invensys Process Systems - Global Solutions in Houston, Texas, USA. He has over 24 years of experience in chemical and gas processing plants design and operations, and has developed business relationships with several domestic and international gas processors, chemical plants and gas transmission pipelines owners. His main area of focus the past decade and a half has been automation, Multivariable Predictive Control (MPC), Advanced Process Control (APC), and optimization design and implementation for the natural gas processing and treating, sulfur recovery, ammonia synthesis, methanol synthesis, liquefied natural gas and power generation industries. Working under contracts to the Gas Research Institute, he developed new multivariable control applications in the natural gas, ammonia and methanol industries. Poe developed APC and Optimization Master Plans for international companies such as Saudi Aramco, Statoil and PDVSA as well as automation and advanced process control feasibility studies for about 100 natural gas processing, power generation, ammonia and methanol plants worldwide. He spent over a decade in natural gas processing operations and engineering experience with Shell Oil Company. Poe has project management experience with Shell Oil and GE Continental Controls with multimillion-dollar projects. He assumed the technical leadership of Continental Controls, a privately held company, through acquisition by GE. After joining GE as part of the Continental Controls acquisition, he became Vice President of this division of GE, which included direction of product development, projects, technical sales support and customer service. He has authored over 25 papers, presented at numerous technical conferences, and received the GE Innovators Award in 1999.

James G. Speight is a senior fuel consultant as well as an Adjunct Professor of Chemical and Fuels Engineering at the University of Utah, USA. He is recognized internationally as an expert in the characterization, properties, and processing of conventional and synthetic fuels and as a chemist with more than 35 years of experience in thermal/process chemistry, thermodynamics, refining of petroleum, heavy oil, and tar sand bitumen, and physics of crude with emphasis on distillation, visbreaking, coking units, and oil-rock or oil catalyst interactions. Speight is currently Editor-in-Chief for the Journal of Petroleum Science and Technology, Energy Sources-Part A: Recovery, Utilization, and Environmental Effects, and Energy Sources-Part B: Economics, Planning, and Policy. He is also the author/editor/compiler of more than 25 books and bibliographies related to fossil fuel processing and environmental issues. Speight was Chief Scientific Officer and then Chief Executive Officer of the Western Research Institute, Laramie, WY, USA, from 1984 to 2000. During this period he led a staff of more that 150 scientists, engineers, and technicians in developing new technology for gas processing, petroleum, shale oil, tar sand bitumen, and asphalt. Speight has considerable expertise in evaluating new technologies for patentability and commercial application. As a result of his work, he was awarded the Diploma of Honor, National Petroleum Engineering Society, for outstanding contributions to the petroleum industry in 1995 and the Gold Medal of Russian Academy of Sciences (Natural) for outstanding work in the area of petroleum science in 1996. He has also received the Specialist Invitation Program Speakers Award from NEDO (New Energy Development Organization, Government of Japan) in 1987 and again in 1996 for his contributions to coal research. Thorough overview of the NGS system and operation considerations

I needed a handbook for quick reference on NG supply system and was glad to order this book. It was fairly expensive, hence I couldn't say "I Loved It" / one star deducted.

I found it to be a thorough and useful resource. It's written from a cost standpoint and provides an experienced considerations. That's really the most important aspect when one gets to the core of the energy business.

Stage Meets Page ....

Sarah Kay's performance of "B" during her 2011 TedTalk brought down the house. I wasn't there, but, having watched the video any number of times, I have been consisently thrilled by her poetry, presence, and exuberant energy. This is a video I have shared via links with many people over the past year.

But ... I am a man with a heart rooted in "page poetry", and videos are not books, and videos make poor gifts for dear friends. So, how overjoyed was I to discover that a book version was in the making and would soon be published by Seth Grodin's Domino Project? Quite!

After a year of design and production, "B" has hit the shelves (somewhere, Amazon has shelves). Sarah Kay and her illustrator friend, Sophia Janowitz have put together a beautiful slim tome filled with Ms. Janowitz's charming drawings flowing around Ms. Kay's eloquent words.

a smartly done one-poem volume that charms and inspires

When poet Sarah Kay took the TED2011 stage, she began her TED Talk with the poem that is the sole focus on this illustrated book. At the conclusion of the poem's performance, the audience gave her a standing ovation (one of two she would earn for her talk!) and it's easy to see why. "B" is a letter from the poet to a future daughter, but in its beauty & thoughtfulness, it is also a celebration of what it is to be a woman: to be a mother and a daughter.

In explaining how she would mother her own daughter, Kay gives insight to everything she has learned in her life -- both on her own and from her mother. "Getting the wind knocked out of you is the only way / to remind your lungs how much they like the taste of air." she explains in one section; "There's nothing more beautiful than the way / the ocean refuses to stop kissing the shoreline, / no matter how many times it's swept away," she offers in another. Kay is a storyteller who isn't afraid to make you laugh or smile, but is absolutely committed to being honest, to sincerity and authenticity. It makes for a fresh work, one that begs to be revisited -- which may explain why the talk has earned 1 million+ hits on the TED Talks website and another 500,000+ hits on YouTube (and surely growing).

After Kay's talk went viral and poetry lovers discovered both her & her work (numerous poems of hers appear on YouTube, earning her hundreds of thousands of hits), I am sure they went looking for print versions of her poetry. And there wasn't any -- until now. And I hope "B" is just the first in a series of books that the publisher, The Domino Project, will put out of Kay's work -- having just one poem available isn't enough!

Still, it's an absolutely worthy effort. As a spoken word poet, I'm sure it was a challenge to think of the best way to capture the bright energy that Kay brings to her performances and get it onto the page, but this smartly designed hardback book -- with its beautiful & delicately rendered pen & ink illustrations by Sophia Janowitz -- is a winner. It's a perfect way to experience the poem on page, as the illustrations and spacious layout allow each line and beat of the poem to be fully enjoyed and realized. And needless to say, it would make for a lovely gift as well!

I recommend this beautiful one-poem tome for anyone who is a fan of Kay or her work. Or anyone who needs a reminder that "this world is made / out of sugar: it can crumble so easily, but don't / be afraid to stick your tongue out and taste it."
