About the Author

Warren Gay has been an electronics enthusiast since childhood and often dragged discarded TV sets home after school. In high school he learned to program the IBM-1130 and then pursued a career in software development at Ryerson Polytechnical, in Toronto. Since then he has worked professionally for over 30 years, mainly in C/C++, under Unix and Linux.

Meanwhile, the love of electronics has never faded since the early creation of his home-brewed Intel 8008 system in the 70's to the present day projects employing the Raspberry Pi. Warren also holds an advanced amateur radio license and was able to work the Mir space station (U2MIR) using packet radio in August 1991.

He's authored other books including Mastering Raspberry Pi for Apress, Sams Teach Yourself Linux in 24 Hours, Linux Socket Programming by Example, and Advanced Unix Programming.

Hot off the press, hardware coding oriented, fast overview, worth having for RasPi C++

This is a preliminary review. Because the book was just published and had no purchaser reviews, when I got my copy this morning I thought I would make the effort to get this up. But you should know that I have not tested the accuracy of the information against actual code running on the RasPi hardware. Still, I thought it would be useful to give potential buyers some sense of the book, even if it is based only on a quick reading of the text. I will revise the review with any problems I find, and I may adjust the star rating up or down with time, but in the meantime, at least there will be something here besides the publisher's official spiel ; ) .

The first thing you need to know about this book is that it is in no way a substantial C++ primer. If you don't already know C++, you are going to have to use some other resource to learn it. There is more "primer" material on electronics hardware than on C++ (there is a little), and once you understand the role the book is attempting to fill, this isn't so bad. Besides, I suspect the author figures programmers need more help with hardware than with coding.

There was one topic in the book I found a little off topic, and that was the section on PiSpy. It wasn't a negative, I just didn't see it as all that relevant to C++ and the RasPi. Perhaps in time I will see the connection, but so far it seems a little tangential.

The book gives you a good deal of the information you will need in order to use C++ and the Raspberry Pi together, including an overview of key RasPi hardware oriented C++ classes. The first half of this book is an orientation for the hardware, the second half is more software oriented, with the assumption that C++ on the Pi is going to be largely about talking to the hardware. Again, if you want to know about C++ application development in the sense of working with data, networking protocols, guis, and so on, you are going to want some additional resources to draw on. If you want to know about coding to manage things like switch bounce, then you will be good to go.

I recognize that the book is something of a survey/intro text, and is slightly less than 200 pages, but I would have liked to see more depth, more sample code, and more examples. I'm not saying that these things aren't there, but if this is your first stab at this kind of development, you'll want to put on a big pot of coffee before you start. If you have basic knowledge of C++, and if you have some knowledge of hardware and embedded development then this publication should allow you to get a quick toehold and start you on your way. But it is the beginning of your journey, not the middle or the end.

In conclusion, if you want to code for the RasPi with C++, you should probably have this book. At the moment the book doesn't have a lot of competition, and it certainly contains worthwhile information. Sadly, the price reflects its niche position.

Chris Cooper is Pro-Vice Chancellor and Dean of the Business Faculty at Oxford Brookes University, UK. He was Chair of the UN World Tourism Organization Education Council (2005 2007) and was awarded the UN Ulysses Medal for contributions to tourism education and policy. He co-edits Current Issues in Tourism and sits on editorial boards for leading tourism, hospitality and leisure journals. PreSchool-A slightly offbeat approach to the familiar topic of parental love. Lawler's verses are simple but the images evoked are sometimes unexpected. Kisses are characterized as colors, pebbles, comets, flowers, raindrops, acorns, snowflakes, and blankets. In each case, abundance is the norm. "If kisses were colors, you'd see every one/of the bands of a rainbow that shines in the sun./If kisses were pebbles, your beach would be lined/with stones by the millions, of all shapes and kinds." Jay's distinctive artwork, "created using alkyd oil paint on paper with crackling varnish," amplifies the verses. Unusual portraits show a pensive pebble, a smiling flower, a welcoming acorn. In other illustrations, anthropomorphic animal children dance together under a rainbow, collect pebbles on a beach, etc. A human mother and child appear on the first page and the last. For adults drawn to Jay's imaginative artwork and/or Lawler's sweetly expressed affection, this book provides an interesting alternative to books like Sam McBratney's Guess How Much I Love You (Candlewick, 1995). It's unclear, however, whether its quiet whimsy will have broad child appeal.

Rhymed couplets pose the question, "If kisses were . . . " for colors, pebbles, comets, flowers, raindrops, acorns, snowflakes, and blankets, ending with a mother's kisses: "My kisses are colors, and raindrops that flow, and pebbles, and acorns, and comets that glow. . . . " The soft, stylized oil paintings with crackling varnish resemble folk art and create a warmhearted feeling as five animals--a penguin, an elephant, a goose, a rabbit, and a pig--act out the suppositions. Endpapers show Mom and the animals pushing baby carriages. Beautiful and Fun To Read

This is a great book, not just for kids, but for the parents who have to read it to them. My kids (4 1/2 and 3) love the slightly quirky, colorful illustrations and the simple, rhyming text. They always laugh at the fun paintings of elephants with strollers and acorn men. And it's just as much of a treat for me to read after having to endure so many mind-numbing, repititious kids books. Definitely one of the best kids/parents books to come along since Don Carter's "Heaven's All-Star Jazz Band."

The story is a wonderful expression of love from a parent to a child. The story is simple and beautiful and the illustrations are old fashioned yet very new. My 14 month old loves the story and the extra kisses that inevitably become part of the reading.

My 4 year old son just loves this book

And I am a little surprised about that because he's very much a smash up cars, trucks, big wheels, type of kid. When I read it to him the first time there was complete silence. Very unusual for my boy!!! Then we read it again, and again. We looked at the pictures as we went, he was asking questions, wanted to know what the acorn was, and the comet. Then after we had read it again, he took the book to his father and "read" him the story. The illustrations are just beautiful.

Excellent HIV Resource

I have used this book for over 5 years years working as a public health professional in the area of HIV/AIDS treatment. The authors are the most respected HIV experts in the field and the annual updates provide the reader with the latest recommendations. I would recommend this book to any type of professional working in HIV. From my expereince, we have used this book as a resource guide giving copies to healthcare professionals working on HIV care and treatment in Ethiopia and beyond. For me, this book is the 'gold standard' of all HIV care and treatment books. A must have if you are working in the field.

The Bartlett guides for HIV/AIDS patient care have long been the best and most trusted source of information on this topic. Its great to see that the editing team continues to update this invaluable resource regularly, and that they now include on line updates to bridge the gap between published editions. Highly recommended for HIV and infectious disease clinicians, and for public health professionals that focus on the problem of HIV/AIDS in the developing world.

We have the 1998 edition, and find it an exceptional resource. Dr. Bartlett's choices of what to leave in, and how much detail to include, are well thought out. We are eagerly waiting for the 2000 edition.

Responsive Web Design explained.

"Responsive Web Design with HTML5 and CSS3" offers lots of examples of modern techniques that are available nowadays for building a responsive website.

The differences between a responsive website and a mobile website are clearly explained. The author emphasizes that responsive web design is not the solution for all problems related to showing websites on different (mobile) devices. In some situations however, when building a pure mobile website is too expansive, a responsive design can be an excellent option. It offers an alternative that is normally better than a standard website with fixed-width design.

The author also shows some cases in which responsive web design is less suitable, like a client who wants the site to look exactly the same on IE 8 and below. A rule-of-the-thumb is that when more than 70% of all users are using IE 8 or below, don't use a responsive web design. Is has too many disadvantages.

Media queries and using percentages in CSS is covered very well. These are more or less the basics for a responsive web design.

With all the examples given, the book is a manual for making a responsive website, especially in combination with HTML5 and CSS3.

As said before, the book contains a lot of examples. Normally however, a very limited part of the HTML or CSS code is given. Also the browser prefixes are omitted. Personally I would have preferred less information about the possibilities of HTML5 and CSS3 and a more step-by-step approach to the new responsive website. Now the results of the code changes are shown, but the code itself is omitted. This prevents the reader building the same site together with the author.

A Hot Topic with Huge Potential

Responsive web design, in my opinion, represents huge potential for business web development. It can be so easy to view it as just another buzzword, more marketing jargon if you may but if you take the time to understand what is means for web development, you will see its pretty hot with huge potential.

Many people, I suspect, are unclear on what exactly Responsive web design is, what does it mean. Indeed, I thought ' ooh not another book on fluid layouts '. Far from it, I can assure you. The author moves through a well worked out movie website project to show that Responsive web design is not a huge single monolithic thing but instead a series of existing technologies ( HTML5, CSS3 ) and design techniques ( flexible grid layout, flexible images and media and media queries ). The majority of the book naturally focuses on HTML5 and CSS3 and the powerful enhancements these technologies bring forth. In addition to their application in Responsive web design the author explores new HTML5 elements ( the semantically meaningful nav element and many more for example ) and shows the vast improvements in CSS3 aesthetics. I particularly loved the simplicity of Text Shadows but we also have Transitions, Transformations and Animations. All very, very useful stuff.

HTML5 and CSS3 are maturing technologies, best to keep this in mind. Hence, to make available the majority of their features in older browsers such as Internet Explorer 6,7 and to a lesser extent 8, not to mention running your site across multiple browsers, a JavaScript tool called Modernizr is required. The last chapter explores this tool.

Readers should have familiarity with previous versions of HTML markup and CSS selectors to gain maximum benefit. The book is really a joy to read and perhaps a launching pad for interesting developments yet to come. Wonderful stuff.

Overpriced and incorrect math

Honestly, I feel duped by all the 5 star reviews. This book is worth about $10 if you are say, a freelance web developer interested in a feet-wet dip into responsive design. For $35 I expect a reference book and this book falls far short of that. To explain more: In the first 4 chapters, ff you cut out the random opinions by the Author, the repetitive 101 level CSS2 stuff and the screen shots, then you are quite literally left with a couple of examples on media queries. Maybe 3 pages of actual information. It does get a little better after that but there is still a ton of filler.

This book is a gentle, first person written intro into some aspects of responsive design. Most of the story-time sections are plain common sense to any developer, regardless of their level of knowledge in responsive design. For a book on HTML5 there is a major lack of understanding of JavaScript from the author. When he is not recommending against it, he recommends its use in antiquated or inefficient ways, such as using in line event handlers.

Another detraction from the book for me was an unforgivable error that the Author makes:

He encourages the use of % over pixel. He is totally right that for fluid layout that technique works. However he devotes a half page to defending it and even argues that you should not round a 9 digit number (like 43.9919951%) to a more reasonable 4 or 5 digits. That statement shows a total lack of comprehension of basic math, browser interpretation and even screen resolution.

To a screen there is no such thing as 1/2 a pixel. On a device with a 2400 pixel wide screen, the difference between 43.991 and 43.999 is not even 1 pixel. So 5 digits is more than enough. But the author insists that you type the extra 4 digits for utterly no point whatsoever.

Worse, all IE browsers truncate your CSS % to only the first 2 decimal places anyway (Firefox does 3, webkit 15). So in a book devoted to giving a similar cross browser experience, he spends half a page telling you to do something that ensures you WON'T get the same results and you will be wasting your time typing on top of it.

Any Author that writes a book on the subject should know what a screen and a browser can do.

A quick summary of some other shortcomings of the book are below:

- Only support for sites running on Apache. If you use Nginx or Node you won't like this book
- In several pages on the tag he never mentions there are only a few video types supported
- In several pages on offline caching he never mentions that it is not supported by IE9 or below
- He openly admits a fear of RegEx and recommends you be scared too.

I could go on, but I won't.

I am not saying it is useless. There are some good tips and information in there, but if you are hoping for a concise book on HTML5 and CSS3 and how to use it for responsive design you will be disappointed. There is a ton of waffle that replaces the mountain of stuff that is missing and should have been included. Like perhaps a mention of the Twitter Bootsrap which is appropriate in any book on responsive design.

Dont Mess with MICK Sinatra

I just love this Mick & Rosalind team! Now Will You Weep is a perfect example of what not to do Mick the Tick of his loved ones. This is a Must Read for the Mob Boss series. I have read and re-read ALL of the books in this excellent collection of inter-racial love stories. Waiting with bag=ted breath for the next installment.

Mick! Mick! Mick! No one messes with Mick's family and gets away with doing so. Ms Monroe showed us Mick's vulnerability without making him look weak. Roz is turning into a regular little gangster. Lol. Those baby's mamas better recognize that Roz is the one who Mick loves above all others. Cathleen made a bad decision. I was glad to see Tommy and Sal , Reno and Big Daddy. As always Mallory hit a home run and I am already ready for the next book, which I hope is Tommy and Grace. Joey needs to grow up.

I Did Weep Due To So Many Errors

Perhaps I waited too long for the next Monroe books - from June 16th until August 9th - for me to appreciate this book; especially, since I checked every day from July 16th until this was released. That still doesn't make up for the poor editing of this book. At first I thought it was just typos, pass instead of past, for example. The absolutely worse was using crust instead of crux. No excuses when you pay full price for a Kindle book. Please don't point out any errors in this review because I'm not an author and no one is paying money for my review. I've noticed some fans use that against those who point out errors in Ms. Monroe's books when reviewing them.

Even if the book was free, your time requires a better edited book. These errors, unlike those in past books, took away from my enjoyment - there were so many. Still, this wasn't one of the best Mick Sinatra books. I've read most, if not all of Ms. Monroe's books; from the President's Series to all of the Mob Boss series, Tommy Gabrini (still my favorite), Sal Gabrini, the Sinatras off Jericho County and finally Mick Sinatra. Even other standalone books that were excellent - love stories of older men and younger women. I think even without any typos or grammatical errors, this was simply not a very good Mick book. I did appreciate this one continuing the story from The Harder They Fall. It saved me going back through books to understand what's going on. That's the best I have to say about this book. I hope Ms. Monroe is not getting bored with the Gabrini/Sinatra family. I would love to read more books as well written as Tommy & Grace books or Sal & Gemma books or Reno & Trina earlier books. Let your fans know if that's the case, so that we can find another author to one-click. I wasn't going to review this book since this is not a favorable review but I bought the book and spent the time reading it. I had to wait almost two weeks from the time I bought it until I had a chance to read it due to illness. After waiting all of that time I was very disappointed with this book. Please have your work edited, even if you have to do it yourself. I'd rather wait for a well written and properly edited book than to have a poorly written and edited book monthly. I've had both in most of Ms. Monroe's books. I've not given up yet.

About the Author
Dr. Shuttleworth worked for 20 years at the UK’s Institute of Hydrology, ultimately as Head of the Hydrological Processes Division. In 1993 he joined the University of Arizona where he is Regents' Professor in both the Department of Hydrology and Water Resources and the Atmospheric Sciences Department. He has served on numerous national and international scientific advisory committees, including the National Research Council, the International Council of Scientific Unions, the International Hydrology Programme, the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme, and the World Climate Research Programme.  In 2001 Dr. Shuttleworth was awarded the AGU Hydrology Prize for "outstanding contributions to the science of hydrology", and in 2006 IAHS, UNESCO and WMO jointly awarded him the prestigious International Hydrology Prize.

An excellent book!

The science of hydrology has advanced in the past 40 years. Models for
hydrological response of a catchment is no longer based on simple
parameters and dimensionless numbers but solving the water and energy
balance equations simultaneously. Observations of hydrological
processes and variables in catchments make use of very sophisticated
instrumentation. Furthermore it has been recognized that the land
surface and atmosphere are not discrete entities but intimately
coupled.
These are the advances that Jim Shuttleworth's book, Terrestrial
Hydrometeorology intimately connects with and relates hydrology as an
integrative rather than a stand alone science. It is very well written
and is a complete presentation of the "new" hydrology. This is a must
read book for every graduate student in water resources and hydrology,
a great reference for the practicing engineer and a book every
undergraduate who wishes to enter graduate school in the area of water
resources. This is a great book and helps advance the science of

fills an unmet need

I teach a course in terrestrial hydroclimatology and have struggled over the last several years to find a textbook that adequately covers the basic elements of this important and timely topic. Consequently, I have had to patch together chapters from a large variety of books. Dr. Shuttleworth's "Terrestrial Hydrometeorology" fills this gap very nicely. It is an excellent review of the topic and is at a level that is accessible to both graduate and upper division undergraduate students from a large breadth of disciplines. I look forward to adopting this textbook in my course.

About the Author

Glyn Davis is Chancellor’s Fellow and Reader in the School of Design at the University of Edinburgh, UK. He is the co-editor, with Gary Needham, of Warhol in Ten Takes (2013), and the author of monographs on Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story (2009) and Far from Heaven (2011).

Kay Dickinson is an Associate Professor of Film Studies at Concordia University, Canada. She is the editor of Movie Music: A Film Reader (2002) and the author of Off Key: When Film and Music Won't Work Together (2008).

Lisa Patti is an Assistant Professor in the Media and Society Program at Hobart and William Smith Colleges.

Amy Villarejo is Professor in the Department of Performing and Media Arts at Cornell University. Her books include Ethereal Queer (2014), Film Studies: The Basics, second edition (2013), and Lesbian Rule: Cultural Criticism and the Value of Desire (2003).
